An Hour With Caroline Lucas

Online public meeting: “The UK, the EU and planetary health in the time of Trump”

This took place on Wednesday, 19th November 2025, 7 pm.

Nobody could be better equipped to talk to Oxford for Europe about these issues than Dr Caroline Lucas. Her environmental credentials are of course second to none and she has long-standing links with our area, serving as the first Green Party councillor on Oxfordshire County Council between 1993 and 1997, and having worked as a Policy Adviser for Oxfam between 1989 and 1999.

Her commitment to the European cause runs deep: she was a Green party MEP for Southeast England from 1999 to 2010, until she was elected to Westminster as the Green Party’s first Westminster MP in 2010. She represented Brighton Pavilion until 2024, achieving over 50% of the vote share on several occasions. It is a credit to her popularity that the Green Party retained the seat after her retirement. She was party leader between 2008 and 2012, and joint leader between 2016 and 2018. In her years in Parliament she spoke out clearly and often about the importance of our links with Europe. She was active in the People’s Vote campaign and she is now one of the co-presidents of the European Movement, the other being Dominic Grieve.

Among her many awards is Politician of the year (Observer Ethical Awards) – three times, and MP of the year (women in Public Life Awards).

Having stood down from Parliament in the last election, she is now Professor of Practice in environmental sustainability at the University of Sussex. She continues to write and speak out on the environment, human rights, fair votes, nuclear disarmament, and reform of drug laws, as well of course as on improving relations with our European friends.

She is the author of many publications and her most recent book is Another England: How to Reclaim Our National Story.

We spent a fascinating and memorable hour in her company
